Michigan keeps surprising us! In this video we leave Kalamazoo and head over to Holland and stay within walking distance to the beach on the shores of Lake Michigan. While in Holland, we learn about this city’s rich history and visit and authentic Dutch windmill! The kids try some “yummy” candy. The city was an adorable Harbor town with plenty of things to do and a thriving downtown area with some excellent restaurants.
Windmills, Dunes and Cherries oh my!
We also continue North along the Western side of Michigan to visit Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. Words cannot really describe how cool this place is! I had no idea how absolutely stunning these huge dunes, next to the crystal blue waters of Lake Michigan would be. We loved exploring this area and wish we had more time to spend here. In nearby, Glen Arbor we stopped at the Cherry Republic for lunch and some tasty cherry treats. If you love cherries, this is an absolute must visit. They had everything from cherry pie, to cherry sodas, to cherry salsa and everything we tasted was delicious!
Michigan State Park Campgrounds are great!
At both stops in this video, we stayed at Michigan state park campgrounds. The locations of both campgrounds were fantastic. At Holland we were located right next to Lake Michigan and for Sleeping Bear we stayed in Interlochen State Park. Interlochen State Park was nestled amongst these huge pine trees and perhaps because the park was relatively empty during our stay it was extra special to be campaign in the woods of northern Michigan. Both state parks were well maintained and the sites were really nice. The only thing I would recommend is to be sure you check out the different shower houses that are near your campsite if you plan to use those facilities. We defaulted to using the one closest to our campsite in Holland, as we did not have full hookups, only to discover on our last day that the other shower house was brand new and was ten times nicer than the one closest to us!
Be sure to watch all the way to the end to see the surprising message we found at the dunes… and lets see how many of you can spot my typo… Freudian slip perhaps???
